Sustainable and affordable housing aim at meeting the housing needs of a larger community by providing better social conditions and minimizing the lifecycle environmental impacts. This study investigates the various challenges and opportunities in designing such a system in an Indian scenario. It is learned that, the major impediments in integrating sustainability and affordability in India’s housing sector are; inadequacies in the existing regulatory framework, and the perceived notion that incorporating sustainability implies additional costs. This study concludes by providing key suggestions for implementing the concept of sustainable and affordable housing in India, such as framing favorable policies and strengthening the supply chains of sustainable materials.
